Item Details
This rifle looks to be entirely original. Its serial number is 57584. Flayderman's Guide to Antique American Arms states Sharps New Model rifles were numbered consecutively from 30,000 to 150,000. Total production around 115,000 for Models 1859,1863 & 1865 This included both carbines and rifles. Further it states that over 100,000 were purchased by the US Government for use in the Civil War. On this one the action works beautifully and it has a 30 strongly rifled barrel with some marks and spots of pitting inside. Original front and rear sights are on the barrel. The metal shows at worst minor spots of light pitting outside and has excellent original finish, above 90%, on the barrel and strong traces of case color in the receiver. All original Sharps markings are on the rifle and clearly visible. The rifle does not look to have ever had a bayonet lug. The stock is in at least very fine condition for its age. If any one has more advance knowledge of marking applied to rifles used in the US Civil War markings on the wood will be of interest. Partly visible cartouches are on the left side of the stock above the trigger area. Definite remains of 2 and possibly three cartouches are on the wood. It has a small boxed rectangular cartouche placed horizontally with what looks like worn letters inside. Beside it is one that runs vertical, The ends of the second cartouche are rounded. It looks like there might be a partial third one as well. The serial number range for Sharps New Models issued to the Unions Col. Hiram Berdans Sharp Shooters is generally given as 54,354 to 57,567. They were issued in 1862. This rifle has serial number 57584. The Sharps New Model was known to have been serial numbered in consecutive order, indicating this one was made around 1862.
