Item Details

{self arranged packing & shipping or free in house pick up} 14/66 Limited Edition artist signed and titled Poem 68-20, mated under glass in 27 3/4" X 21 3/4" frame.  Haku Maki, originally named Maejima Tadaaki, was born in 1924 in Asomachi, Ibaraki Prefecture. His life took a dramatic turn in 1945 when, as part of a kamikaze pilot squadron, he narrowly escaped death due to Japan's surrender on August 14, 1945. Following this pivotal moment, Haku Maki pursued a career as a high school teacher. It wasn't until 1950 that he adopted the artistic name Haku Maki, subsequently gaining renown as the celebrated print maker and painter recognized today. Haku Maki is renowned for his abstract prints, featuring enigmatic hieroglyphic-like characters reminiscent of ancient inscriptions found on unearthed stones, awaiting interpretation by archaeologists. These "odd hieroglyphics" are, in fact, refined versions of ancient Chinese kanji characters meticulously re-imagined by Haku Maki to enhance their visual appeal. Often titled as "poems" accompanied by numerical identifiers, these prints embody his artistic vision.Throughout his career, health challenges often impeded his artistic endeavors. In 2000, Haku Maki succumbed to cancer, leaving behind an indelible legacy in the art world.
